About the Winery

Hopesgrove is a family-run, small-scale winery with just under 10 acres of vines currently planted on gently sloping limestone hills in Hawkes Bay, The Koopman family, hailing from California, planted the vineyard in 2006 with the goal to grow and make top quality, terroir-driven wines.

Focused on French varietals, particularly those of the Rhône Valley and Burgundy, Pieter creates age-worthy wines that express the local soil and climate.

Wines are mainly crafted in the vineyard, with a heavy focus on hand work, sustaining balance in the fruit, and expressing each season.

Hopesgrove’s vineyard has been organically farmed for over a decade, with BioGro certification being sought and granted as of 2024.

With a lifelong dream to grow and make exceptional single vineyard wines, complete from vine to bottle, Pieter recognized the potential of Hawkes Bay as a world-class winemaking region. While in pursuit of finding and planting his own vineyard, he was Cellar Master at Craggy Range for a number of years, after which he moved on to become the head Winemaker at the Hawkes Bay Wine Co, where he currently crafts our boutique, single vineyard Hopesgrove Wines.
